Nesco Products Repair & Maintenance Guidelines

All products are molded from high-density polyurethane foam, which is resistant to mold, mildew and other fungus attacks, insect infestation, warpage (when properly installed), cracking, crazing, most chemical compounds, and ultra violet degradation.  Of the above product qualities, UV degradation, as contained within sunlight, is solved through the use of quality exterior coatings, which have good opacity resistance.  Further, all products, when molded, are sealed with a prime coat which is impregnated into the exterior surface.

Normal maintenance of the exterior product surfaces is determined by color fading and coating oxidation rather than product degradation.  Nesco products are to be finish coated by the customer/installer in the field.  The quality of exterior paints or coatings are therefore very important and determine the limiting factor as to when maintenance is required.  Quality exterior acrylic coatings or paints prove to be the most effective and last from three to five years, however this varies with geographical location and weathering exposure.  Solvent coatings or paints may also be utilized such as exterior enamels, but are more difficult to apply.

Products, when damaged, are easily repaired using acrylic caulk or automotive body filler products such as ëBondoí.  In cases where the damage is minor, such as nicks, gouges, surface cuts or chips caulking is the fastest and easiest method of repair.  Major surface damages where foam material is displaced, holes, or deep penetrations occur should be filled using automotive Bondo following that productís application instructions.  It is important that the exterior coating and factory applied prime coat be removed to achieve proper adhesion (sanding is the best method for this).  After the repair is effected, the surface should be coated with a heavy bodied acrylic sealer then finish coated with the exterior trim color.

In the event of breakage, the part may be glued using any approved exterior adhesive (see below).  Nesco foam is not affected by most organic solvents therefore solvated adhesives are most desirable.  An excellent bonding agent is 3Mís structural adhesive #2216, which is an epoxy and has a ninety-minute working life.  You can also use Permalite Plastics ëSea-Goin Epoxy #1350.

No special materials or techniques are required in performing routine maintenance on Nesco molded products.  Most common and easily attainable maintenance material may be utilized.  If a specific condition or situation should arise, and a repair procedure is in question, please call our office.
