Split Column Installation |

® Be sure that you have solid framing above and below the column ® Then set both halves of the column inside up on the floor or ground ® Next set one-half column in place and attach to the framing with mechanical fastenersópreferably coarse thread deck screws or drywall screws of sufficient length to penetrate framing by 1î ® Then align the second half with the first to line-up seams (confirm columns are numbered 1a & 1b or 2a & 2bódo not put 1a with 2b) note: half columns will not work as full splits. ® Be sure that the first half is not twistedóseam sides must be plumb ® Apply epoxy (3M #2216 or equal) to the entire edges of both split column halves with 100% coverage ® Set the second half in place and band clamp halves together making sure that all areas are aligned ® At this time if you are having alignment problems, use screws of sufficient length to draw the two column halves into line and tighten together (diagram out) ® The epoxy should be squeezed out from between the two halves in a small bead ® After the epoxy sets up, cut the excess material off and sand the seam smooth until there is at least 2î of area that has no paint showing the full length of the column seam ® Cover this area with a thin layer of basic automotive bondo and sand smoothónote: if you do not sand bondo paint will not stick ® Seal with a primer and paint |
